Despite my complete lack of football knowledge or excitement for the game, I can’t deny that I live in a city which bleeds scarlet & grey and turns every knick-knack imaginable into a Block O. Walk down any street in Columbus during football season and you’ll be greeted with a friendly, “O-H!” in which you are expected to return with a hearty, “I-O!” Standing in line at the grocery store, waiting at the dentist office, mailing a package at the post office, all become perfect times to chat your neighbor up about the upcoming game.

In an effort to not be a social outcast, it has become necessary to find some part of football that I can get excited about.

Well, I found it. Tailgating.

In college, I would actually sell my OSU game ticket every week in order to continue the tailgating portion of the day. The trend didn’t catch on too well, however, as most people preferred to be in the stands cheering on their team.

Anyway, for me, one of the best parts of tailgating is the food. Obviously. With so many games to tailgate for this season, it will be important to switch up your menu to keep the hungry fans happy – especially if their favorite team is losing. Here are a few favorites outside of the usual hamburgers & hotdogs:

1) Make meatballs the day before, keep them warm in the crock-pot and bring along some sub rolls & parmesan cheese for warm meatball subs.

2) Have a chili cook-off with your friends for the ultimate bragging rights. Switch it up by making a white bean chicken chili to clinch the win.

3) Use leftover cake or pie (especially the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas!) and cut into bite size pieces. I did this with pumpkin pie one particularly frigid Sunday morning for a Browns game and it was a huge hit.

4) Bring a portable fire pit and make grilled cheese or pizza sandwiches with those cast-iron sandwich pie makers.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to great tailgating food. My sister, for example, is an ambitious tailgating culinarian, and has even made chicken paprikash to kick off the game! All in all, when the food is delicious, everyone wins.

Happy Tailgating!

And… oh yeah… Go Team.

Wedding season is in full swing and we have had the honor of cooking for & servicing some beautiful receptions this year – each one unique to the style and personalities of the bride & groom.

In early May, we catered to a travel-themed wedding at North Bank Park where the guests moved from station to station sampling tasty dishes like San Diego Fish Tacos, Hand-Carved Virginia Smoked Ham served alongside Sandman’s Signature Goat-Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Mini Maryland Crab Cakes w/ lemon bistro sauce, and Peppercorn Encrusted Kansas City Strip Steak.

Another one of our favorites was in early June where we fired up the grill and cooked jalapeno bratwursts & jumbo all-beef hotdogs onsite. We also brought along our house-smoked beef brisket which was definitely a crowd pleaser. One particularly happy guest from Texas told us it was the BEST beef brisket she has ever had – and Texans sure know their brisket! Guests also feasted on creamy mac & cheese, green beans with bacon & vegetarian brown-sugar baked beans. A perfect meal for the couple’s shabby-chic reception, which took place at Camp Mary Orton.

Our most recent wedding reception took place at the shelter house at the Whetstone Park of Roses. A small gathering of fifty people beginning at 11am, the bride and groom chose to serve their guests brunch-style foods. Fresh bagels & pastries, a seasonal display of juicy pineapple, strawberries, melons & grapes, jumbo shrimp cocktail, herb-roasted turkey and one of our favorite breakfast offerings: Vegetable Strada – an egg casserole filled with tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and chunks of French bread.

When it comes to your wedding meal, there is no need to be traditional. The food can set the tone for your entire event. Don’t be afraid to get creative and draw in cuisine that fits the style of you and your fiancé as a couple. No matter your budget, at Sandman, we love customizing & designing menus for brides and grooms to make your day special and keep your guests talking for years to come.

When it comes to event catering in Columbus, nobody beats Sandman Gourmet Catering

Why? Because when it comes to catering in Columbus. The devil is in the details. Sandman Gourmet Catering takes that old phrase to heart. And then some.

The Sandman, Rich Rores, has been a Columbus caterer for years and a chef for decades and he has served thousands of hungry and discriminating restaurant, wedding and party guests around the world, so we can honestly say that he’s seen just about everything.

It’s attention to detail combined with imagination that makes or breaks Columbus, Ohio caterers. After all, this city is the food capital of the Midwest, so the competition is fierce. At Sandman, our custom menus add a culinary atmosphere that flows with your event and we offer a range of dishes to satisfy the grumpiest of gourmets.

For example, if Sandman Catering is catering your business luncheon in Columbus or Central Ohio, we’ll provide creative fruit and vegetables options so your employees won’t fall asleep before the Power Point presentation. But if it’s a summer corporate party you’re having, we might suggest going with a BBQ theme, serving up delicious pulled pork, brats and potato salads. Then your co-workers can laze away while having fun in the summer sun.

We can play up to your guests’ tastes with a menu serving up fresh mozzarella on squires wrapped in prosciutto or if your guests have more down to earth taste buds, we’ll bake fresh gourmet pizzas that both adults and children will love.

Looking for a wedding caterer in Columbus, Ohio? Your friends and family will be pleasantly surprised when they find their meals are far from standard wedding faire.

Your happiness and satisfaction are the most important to us and that’s why we work with you – always – in order to give you the most innovative and fresh culinary perspectives. Ultimately, it’s all about fantastic food that will exceed your expectations.
